Conceptual models Flashcards
What was the Minnesota starvation experiment?
Induced 25% weight loss through reducing calorie intake by 50% in 32 healthy male volunteers. Looked at the effects. Led to anhedonia, apathy, asociality. Obsessionally, depression and anxiety.
What were the key findings of the Minnesota starvation experiment?
That many AN symptoms appear due to starvation and that they maintain the disorder. That weight loss can be a trigger for an ED. And that the effects can be reversed by up keeping nutritional intake again.
What is the transdiagnostic model of eating disorders? (Fairburn et al.)
Core: dysfunctional scheme for self-evaluation. They are very hard on themselves and this channels into shape/weight evaluation, which reduces self-worth. They also have core low self-esteem coupled w/ perfectionism, which leads to strict dieting and weight control - Leading to either starvation syndrome or binge-purging cycles.
