Ear disease Flashcards
what does the Rinne test do?
test unilateral conductive hearing loss by placing tuning fork behind ear
What is a weber test
tests unilateral, conductive hearing loss through placing tuning fork on forehead
what does a tympanogram show
pressure change showing ossicle damage if higher or glue hair if a flat line
what things would you see during a normal otoendoscopy
tympanic membrane, cone of light, malleus
what are the 6 Ds that are suggestive of ear disesae
Dindin, dizziniess, discharge, discomfort, defective movement of face, deafness
what are the 4 types of deafness
conductive, sensorineural, mixed and central
where does conductive deafness occur
anywhere from external acoustic meatus to including middle ear
how would you present with conductive hearing loss
can only hear muffled sounds
where does the sensorineural deafness affect?
inner ear
what is a hallmark sign for sensorineural deafness not present in the others
itching ears
where does central deafness affect
the central nervous system
what could cause discharge
AOM, COM,CSF
what is the most common disease of dizziness with hearing losss
menieres disease, labyrinthitis
what is dindin
sound of silence
is it upper or lower motor neurone that causes defective facial movements
lower
what is otitis externa
fungal infection of outer ear (aspergillus)
what is acute otitis media
inflammation of the middle ear
how do you treat acute otitis media
usually viral so should get better by itself but amoxicillin if really bad
what is otitis media effusion
fluid is trapped in behind the tympanic membrane
what is another name for OME
glue ear
what to do if OME doesn’t resolve within 6-12 weeks
get a hearing test done
what is cholesteatoma
basically abnormal skin growth- squamous epithelium in inner ear can cause white cystic type things
what are the main signs of a cholesteatoma
smelly discharge and gradual hearing loss
what imaging technique is used in cholesteatoma
diffusion weighted MRI
