E3 - Using and manipulating data Flashcards
What are the two sources of data?
What are there benefits?
Primary data - Gathered through original research done by organisation or individual.
Comes directly from the source
Examples - Questionnaire and interviews
Benefits - More relevant, reliable and more up to date
Secondary is gathered by someone else and come with a wide range of diff sources
Examples - Textbooks and web info
Benefits - Much cheaper and quicker to obtain information
Characteristics and implications of collecting data methods
What are their advantages and disadvantages?
Questionnaires - Set of closed questions. Gain info for analysis
Advantages
Disadvantages
Focus groups - Questions asked to a big group. Should interactive and allow each person to state opinion
Advantages - Respondents can build on each others opinion
Disadvantages - Would be difficult to go against the rest of the group. Data is not numerical
Interview - One to one meeting. Used to gather information about one person
Advantages - Draws out detailed responses. Greater honesty
Disadvantages - Lengthy to gether info from a wide range of people
What is numerical and data modelling
Numerical - Used to simulate real-life system
Allows user to analyse data and make future predictions
Used for weather prediction - Sensors capture temp and wind speed which is used to predict
Data - Process of planning the structure of a database
Ensures database is set up correctly to be efficient in storing, processing and extracting data
What are the methods of
ensuring data accuracy
Verification - Data entered matches the original source
Validation - Checks to ensure data is sensible and reasonable
