B2 - Networks Flashcards
Features, uses and purpose of Personal Area Network (PAN)
Connects devices within range of single person syncing data between two devices
Uses Bluetooth and USB
Used in businesses and personal use
Advantages - Reduced cables, synchronised data ensures data is up to date and very secure when transmitting data
Features, uses and purpose
of Local Area Network (LAN)
Network over a small geographical area - small building
Connects all computers in building or household to share resources
Uses Ethernet cable
Advantages - Devices can be shared saving money, files can be accessed from any device and devices can be centrally controlled to be more efficient such as installing softwar
Features, uses and purpose of Wide Area Network (WAN)
Network over a large geographical area
Uses dedicated network lines from telecom providers
Used by businesses to connect LANs from different places
Advantages - Private data can be transmitted using private leased lines, faster data transfer, files can be accessed from different location
Features, uses and purpose of Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Private network that runs across a public network
Encrypts data
Allows employees to access work securely from home
Advantages - Gain secure access while away from office, cheaper than WAN
Factors affecting choice of network
User experience - Ease of use, performance, availability, accessibility
User needs - what is the network being used for
Specifications - Data transfer speed, maximum bandwidth, power consumption are all components
Connectivity - Will network have WiFi or cable broadband
Cost - How much to set up and maintain
Factors affecting choice of network 2
Efficiency - How effectively are tasks completed without resources being wasted
Compatibility - Can network communicate with other devices connected to network
Implementation - Timescale, testing and downtime
Productivity - How quick tasks can be completed
Security - How safe is the network from security threats. VPN
How do features of network affect performance of a device
Heavy usage could lead the CPU and memory to be overwhelmed which can cause server to crash
Limited bandwidth makes data transfer speed slower
Firewalls slow down data transfer as they look for threat in each data packet
