Used by everyone. Every sports team, celebrity, tv show, film all have a social media page
Lets people network around the world via commenting on things people find in common
Allows businesses, sport teams etc to post important information with their fans or customers
Ways of communicating with online communities - Blogs, microblog, vlog
Blogs - Regularly updated websites which are used by people to share news and talk on topics of interest. Usually written informally
Microblogs - Designed for short texts messages. Twitter is a microblog
Vlogs - Video form of blogging. Commonly seen on YouTube
Offers commentary to audience and it allows them to comment on these videos or posts
Have also become a source of income for people via advertisements

Content is made by a community of users. They work together to add new information or edit the content to make it more accurate
Wikipedia is an example
Best place to find information but should always find source of information to see if it’s reliable

Lets communities communicate using short text messages
Real-time conversation
Not popular anymore
Ways of communicating with online communities - Instant messaging
Real time conversation however the conversation is private between the two people talking
Replacing SMS messages as it is free and can attach hyperlinks and files such as images to the message
Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger are examples

Audio file which is released weekly to give latest news or opinion of a topic
Alternative for text based methods and brilliant for visually impaired people
No interaction as people listening cannot ask questions or leave comments

Similar to chat rooms but messages are longer and are not real-time conversation on forums
Maintained by a community of volunteer moderators
