E3: Amphibia Flashcards
What species did amphibia give rise to?
Reptilia
Approx. how many species of amphibia?
4000 species worldwide
When were amphibia the dominant tetrapod?
300 mya
How many chambers are in the amphibian heart?
3 chambered heart
- split atrium (right and left)
- ventricle
Describe amphibian skin
Smooth, moist skin with poison (not all) and mucous glands
How is fertilization done?
Internal(mating rituals) and external (lay eggs, and male releases sperm over eggs like fish do)
What does double life mean?
Part of their life cycle is in water and the other is on land.
Amphibia are consitered double life organisms.
Define ectothermic
Body temperature depends on their external environemnt. Causes a slow metabolism.
Describe the skeleton of an amphibian
Bony skeleton
T/F: Amphibia go through metamorphosis between larval and adult stages.
True.
ie. tadpole becomes a frog
What two senses are significant in ambphibia?
Vision and hearing
What is the significance of hearing?
- Find food
- find mate
- predators
What causes tadpoles to lose their tails?
apoptosis (programmed cell death)
What are the four parts of frog visual receptors?
- edge detectors
- respond to sharp edges produced by stationary objects - event detectors
- respond to moving boundaries that contract with background - dimming detectors
- respond to shadows - bug detectors
- respond to small moving objects = insects
What are the extant orders?
- Anura (frogs, toads)
- Urodela (salamanders)
- Gymnophiona (caecilians, legless forms)
