Annelida Lab Questions Flashcards
Type of cavity
coelomate
How do they respire?
Diffusion, no respiratory system
Type of gut?
complete
Define segmentation
The repetition of segments (same functions)
How do they move?
peristalsis (wavelike movement) by circular and longitudinal muscle fibers
What are the advantages of segmentation?
If any are damaged, then there are remaining segments to fill the function
How do they reproduce?
- Hermaphrodites: monoecious, but they don’t self fertilize.
- Share sperm, then lay eggs
- Sexually
What is the function of the typhlosole in the gut?
Absorption of food in digestive tract
What are the major classes?
Polychaeta - clam worms
Oligochaeta - earth worms
Hirudinida - leaches
Metamerism
The repetition of body parts, like segmentation but is the internal repetition more than external
Clitellum function
A thick, saddle-like ring found in the epidermis (skin) of the worm. To form a cocoon for its eggs, the clitellum secretes a viscous fluid. This organ is used in sexual reproduction of some annelids, such as leeches.
Nephridiopores
waste excretion from the nephridium
What kind of circulatory system?
Closed, blood remains in vessels
Cephelization?
Yes
Germ layers?
Triploblastic, 3
