A
  1. sternal end of clavicle articulates with clavicular notch of manubrium of sternum and a small part of 1st costal cartilage
  2. articular surfaces are separated by an articular disc (fibrocartilage)  completely divides joint into 2 compartments

sternoclavicular joint ligaments

A
  1. anterior and posterior sternoclavicular ligaments  reinforce anterior and posterior aspects of joint capsule, respectively
  2. interclavicular ligament: connects sternal ends of both clavicles across jugular (suprasternal) notch of sternum
  3. costoclavicular ligament: strong ligament that extends from 1st rib and 1st costal cartilage to inferior surface of sternal end of clavicle
