Dyslipidaemia Flashcards
1
Q
What class of drugs MOA is to inhibit HMG-COA reductase?
A
Statins.
2
Q
List the 3 stages of statin induced myopathy.
A
- Myalgia (muscle aches and pains)= reversible.
- Myositis (inflammation to muscle cells, more damage to muscle cells)= sometimes reversible.
- Rhabdomyolysis (muscle cell death)= irreversible.
3
Q
Name one sign/symptom of rhabdomyolysis and its mechanism.
A
Dark urine due to the increase in creatine kinase and myoglobin which is a sign of muscle death. This can also damage the kidney and is life threatening.
4
Q
What drug class would a statin be combined with if a patient had a high cholesterol diet?
A
Ezetimibe as its MOA is to reduce the absorption of cholesterol from the diet.
5
Q
Why may the combination of ezetimibe and a statin be problematic?
A
Increases the risk of muscle issues such as statin induced myopathy.
