Anti-psychotics Flashcards
List some negative symptoms associated with Schizophrenia.
Depressive like symptoms: lowered mood, low motivation.
List some positive symptoms associated with Schizophrenia.
Psychosis, delusions, hallucinations.
List the 2 classes of anti-psychotics.
Typical and atypical.
What is the MOA of Haloperidol (typical anti-psychotic)?
Blocks D2 receptors, blocks dopaminergic response in the mesolimbic pathway.
List the main ADRs and the receptors responsible for Haloperidol (typical anti-psychotic).
D2 receptor block: muscle rigidity, clonus, tremor, bradykinesia.
Muscarinic Receptor block: anti-cholinergic effects: dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention.
Alpha 1 receptor block: vasodilation, orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia.
H1 histamine receptors: sedation, hunger, weight gain.
What pathway does Risperidone (atypical anti-psychotic) act on?
Mesocortical pathway, blocking 5-HT2 receptors.
