Dural sinuses and veins Flashcards
What veins drain into the Great vein of Galen
Where does it drain to?
The Internal Cerebral Veins and the Basal veins of Rosenthal.
Drains to the Great vein of Galen, aka great cerebral vein (then to the Straight Sinus)
List the dural sinuses
Name Drains to
Inferior sagittal sinus: Straight sinus
Superior sagittal sinus: Typically becomes right transverse sinus or confluence of sinuses
Straight sinus: Typically becomes left transverse sinus or confluence of sinuses
Occipital sinus Confluence of sinuses
Confluence of sinuses Right and Left transverse sinuses
Sphenoparietal sinuses Cavernous sinuses
Cavernous sinuses Superior and inferior petrosal sinuses
Superior petrosal sinus Transverse sinuses
Transverse sinuses Sigmoid sinus
Inferior petrosal sinus Internal jugular vein
Sigmoid sinuses Internal jugular vein
What drains to the straight sinus?
the inferior saggital sinus and the great cerebral vein of Galen
What drains to the confluence of sinuses
The Superior Sagittal sinus
The straight Sinus
The occipital sinus
Pachymeninx
Dura mater
Leptomeninx
Arachnoid and Pia maters
Meninx Primitiva
The embryonic mesenchyme tissue that forms all 3 layers of the meninges.
Derived from both Mesoderm and Neural Crest
Pia
Thin, vascular membrane which surrounds the brain tightly.
Mesothelial cells.
Surrounds vessels which penetrate into the brain parenchyma.
Tela choroidea
Forms part of the roof of the third and fourth ventricles
Formed by the pia mater
Cranial Dura
Dense fibrous connective tissue
TWO TYPES:
ENDOSTEAL Dura,
MENINGEAL dura.
The Endosteal Dura terminates at the foramen magnum and does not continue to the spinal cord.
Meningeal Dura is continuous with the Spinal Dural Sac.
The meningeal dura also follows cranial nerves, and fuses with/becomes epineurium as the exit the skull.
Diploic veins
Run from the subarachnoid space inside of the skull to the Superficial fascia layer of the scalp outside of the skull
Dural sinus
Space between the meningeal and endosteal layer of dura
Subarachnoid Cistern
Very large area of subarachnoid space, in between the arachnoid and pia maters.
Cranial epidural space
In the skull, the POTENTIAL space in between the skull and the endosteal dura mater.
Other name for Arachnoid granulation (especially large, calcified ones)
Pachionian granulation (increase with age, visible on CT).
