Cisterns Flashcards
Cerebellopontine angle
The cerebellopontine angle is the anatomic space between the cerebellum and the pons filled with cerebrospinal fluid
Contains CN 7 and CN 8 and Bochdaleks flower basket
How many unpaired and paired cisterns are there?
7 unpaired,
5 paired.
and 1 in the spinal cord (Lumbar cistern)
What are the unpaired cisterns
1 Cisterna magna, Cerebellomedullary cistern 2 Median pontine cistern 3 Interpeduncular cistern 4 Chiasmatic cistern 5 Cistern of lamina terminalis 6 Supracallosal cistern 7 Cistern of Great Cerebral vein
What are the paired cisterns
1 Cerebellopontine cisternae, aka Lateral pontine cisternae
2 Ambeins cisternae
3 Crural cisternae
4 Sylvian cistern aka cistern of lateral sulcus
5 Carotid cisternae
Contents of cisterna magna
aka cerbellomedullary cistern,
Below the cerebellum, posterior to the medulla
Median aperture of Magendie
(bigest cistern, with nothing in it but a hole)
Borders and Contents of
Median Pontine cistern
Borders:
Between the Clivus and Ventral surface of Pons
Contents
Basilar Artery
IACA arteries (inf. ant. cerebellar arteries), branching off of basilar.
Abducens nerve (CN6)
Borders and Contents of
Interpeduncular cistern
The superior border of the pons to the area in between the cerebral peduncles
Basilar artery
Superior cerebellar arteries
Posterior Cerebral Arteries
Oculomotor nerves
Borders and contents of
Chiasmatic cistern
Surrounds the optic chiasm, divided from the Interpeduncular cistern, which it is immediately anterior to by a lamina of connective tissue.
Optic chiasm Optic nerves Begining of optic tract Infundibulum of hypothalamus Pituitary stalk.
Borders and contents of
Cistern of lamina terminalis
Anterior to the lamina terminalis, connects the chiasmatic and supracallosal cisterns.
Anterior cerebral arteries (A1 section below the anterior communicating artery, and A2 section above it)
- A1 branches:
- anteromedial central arteries/Lenticulostriate arteries
- A2 branches:
- Recurrent artery of Heubner/Distal medial Striate Artery
- Orbitofrontal artery/medial frontal basal artery
- Frontopolar artery
- Pericallosal artery
Anterior communicating arteries
Borders and contents
Supracallosal cistern
Anterior cerebral arteries
Frontopolar artery/polar frontal artery
Pericallosal artery
-which gives of the callosomarginal artery, running in the cingulate sulcus.
-also gives off the superior parietal and inferior parietal arteries
-anastomoses posteriorly with the Posterior Cerebral Artery (sometimes)
Borders and contents
Cistern of the Great Cerebral Vein
Between the quadrigeminal plate, splenium of the corpus callosum, and the superior medullary velum
Contains:
Pineal body
Great Cerebral vein of Galeni
Posterior Cerebral Arteries.
Borders and contents
Lateral pontine cistern
aka pontocerebellar cistern
From the cerebellopontine angle
Laterally to the Internal acoustic meatus
Anteriorly to the Meckel’s Cave
Contains:
