Cortex Histology Flashcards
Cortical Layers
1) Molecular/Plexiform layer
- Dendrites of pyramidal cells and axons.
2) Outer Granular layer
- Dense cell layer of Granular and Stellate cells
3) Outer Pyramidal layer
- Loose cell layer of Medium sized pyramidal cells
4) Inner Granular layer
- Dense layer of Granular and Stellate cells
5) Inner Pyramidal Layer (Ganglionic Layer)
- Large/Giant Pyramidal cells of Betz
6) Multiform cell layer
- Small neurons and polymorphic cells of various sizes and shapes
Layers 2 and 4 ( the Granular layers are predominant in Sensory cortical layers
Layer 5, the Inner pyramidal layer is dominant in the Motor cortex.
Neocortex
Definition and alternate names
Isocortex, Neopallium
6 layered cortex
Allocortex
Cortex with less than 6 layers
Subtypes:
Paleocortex: 3-5 layers Olfactory Bulb, Parahippocampal Gyrus, Anterior Perforated Substance, Periamygdala area
Archicortex: 3 layers
Hippocampus.
Primary Olfactory Cortex .
Periallocortex: Transitional zone between neocortex and allocortex.
The two main types of cortex
Neocortex and Allocortex
