Dullard & Miller Flashcards
What do Dullard and Miller discuss?
- Personality development
- Psychopathology
- Re-explain Freud’s theory
What is part of personality development?
Cue (stimuli) - the stimuli will be different for each person
Drive - secondary drives are very unique for each human being
Response - through trial and error, people will respond differently
What is Dullard and Miller’s model?
Mediated Generalization/Stimulus Generalization. Tendency for stimuli other than stimulus present in the learning process to elicit a learned response. The more similar these stimuli are to the one actually used in the learning process, the greater the probability is that they will elicit a learned response.
Ex: a little boy is deathly afraid of dentist. Parents take him to a therapist, who finds out that when the boy was younger, an intruder had broken into his room at night. As a result, the boy had a fear of dark rooms, and was told by his parents to keep a flashlight next to his bed. The psychologist recommended the child to take his flashlight to the dentist to help calm him down; it worked.
Once a response is acquired, that response could be used in different situations. This response is known as a ____.
Trait
What are the similarities between Dullard and Miller’s theory and Freud’s theory?
Both talk about biological drives
Responses can be acquired unconsciously
Drives can contradict one another
True or false: Despite it being a new paradigm, Miller’s ideas are derived from Freud
