Dt Flashcards
What is felling?
Tree is felled, cut into manageable length, normally in winter when tree has less water
What is debarking?
Remaining bark and branches cut off and logs created
What is conversion?
Logs cut into planks, this is now known as timber
What is seasoning?
Process of drying out the wood, air dry or kiln-drying
What are the differences between air and kiln-drying?
Kiln-drying- quicker, controlled environment
Air drying- seasoned naturally
What is rough sawn timber?
Timber that is untreated and cut into planks
What is planed all round(par)?
Process of using a plane to smooth both the edges and sides of a plank. Usually removing 2-3mm
What are hardwoods?
Wood that comes from deciduous trees, large fall leaves that fall in autumn, hardwoods take longer to grow, not easily sourced and expensive
Examples of hardwood?
Mahogany
Ash
Oak
Beech
Balsa
What is softwood?
Wood that comes from coniferous trees, pines or needles, evergreens, faster growing than hardwoods, cheaper to buy, considered a sustainable material
Examples of a softwood?
Pine
Spruce
What is manufactured board?
Usually made from timber waste and adhesive, to make them more aesthetically pleasing they are often veneered, cheap
Examples of maufaxtured board?
Plywood
Chipboard
MDF
Pros and cons of through and through cut?
Pro
Low cost
Little waste
Easy, board doesn’t have to be turned
Fast
Con-
Likely to cup when drying
No grain pattern
Less durable
What are the 6 Rs
Reduce
Refuse
Re-use
Repair
Recycle
Re-think
Examples of reinforced material?
Concrete
Carbon fibre
Kevlar
What is a composite material?
Materials made of two or more constituent materials
Examples of composite materials?
Plywood
Fibreglass
What are all drill bits?
Hole saw
Frostner bit
Twist drill bit
Wood drill bit
Flat bit
Countersink bit
What is wasting and abrading?
Wasting is the removal of material and abrading means to wear away by friction
What tool would be used for wasting and abrading by hand?
Smoothing plane
Chisel
Surform
Rasp
File
What are some standard woodworking components?
Wood screw
Wood nail
Wood tack
Dowel
Hinge
Block joints
Rigid joint
Cam fastener
What are the stock forms?
Plank- piece of timber
Sheet- manufactured boards
Beading- thin mouldings
Dowel- circular section of timber
Cladding- any timber outside of building
Veneer-thin natural wood slice
Mouldings-specially shaped sections of wood
What is drilling?
Bare holes drilled into earths crust to reach a pocket of a resource
What is meant by social footprint?
Measure of the impact of a companies social policies have on society as a whole
What do surface treatments and finishes do?
Applied to Timbers to Improve their appearance and enhance certain properties
Different types of timbers and surface treatments
Acrylic paint
Wax
Oil
Varnish
Wood stain
What is quality control?
Checking if a product is being produced correctly
Step by step steam bending
Create steam box and leave wood in a box
Steam increases moisture content, thin strip more bendy
Once moisture content increased, now easily bendable
Bend wood into whatever shape you need
Pin wood in place and leave to dry
Step by step lamination
Put thin piece of wood into hot water, let it soak, 1 hour per 25mm
Take pieces out
Glue two or more veneers together
Place in former while still wet then put into vice and squeeze
Leave until dry
