What is the AREDS AMD classification?

A

No AMD: none.small drusen
Early AMD: Multiple small hard drusen, few intermediate sied drusen and hyper/hypopigmentation of RPE
Intermediate AMD: Extensive drusen, one large soft drusen
Late AMD: Geographic atrophy or presence of neovascular AMD

What are symptoms of Dry AMD?

A
  • None/Gradual impairment of vision (especially near)
  • Later stages: +ve scotoma, difficulty recognising faces, difficulty seeing in dim light.
  • Painless

What are the signs of DRY AMD?

A

Early = Hard drusen at macula, hyper/hypo pigmentation of RPE
Later: Geographic Atrophy and RPE detachment (PED)

PED can lead to wet AMD

What is the management/Recall for DRY AMD?

A

Recall: 12 months to monitor

Provide advise on: diet/nutrition (AREDS-2 formula), UV exposure, smoking and exercise.
