Drugs to Tx Influenza Flashcards
What is the MOA of Neuraminidase Inhibitors?
Stops viral reproduction by preventing neuraminidase from cleaving sialic acid on glycoproteins on human cells
What is the oral neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir is indicated for?
Influenza A and B infection patients that have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours
Oseltamivir is contraindicated in what adult patients?
Those with end-stage renal disease
Oseltamivir is contraindicated in what pediatric patients?
1) Children younger than 2 weeks of age
2) Prophylaxis in children younger than 1 year of age
When can Oseltamivir be used as a substitute for early influenza vaccination?
Never
What warning is issued with Oseltamivir in terms of affecting the influenza vaccine effectiveness?
Do not give live influenza vaccine (intranasal) within 2 weeks before, or 48 hours after oseltamivir is given
What is Oseltamivir activated by?
What other drug inhibits this activation?
1) Carboxylesterase 1 isoenzyme (CES1)
2) Clopidogrel
What is a inhalation neuraminidase inhibitor which is approved for treatment of acute uncomplicated illness due to influenza A and B virus?
Zanamivir
What population is zanamivir indicated for?
Adults and pediatric patients aged 7 and up who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days
What conditions is zanamivir contraindicated for?
1) Seizures
2) Any lung disease
Does zanamivir have the same guidelines as oseltamivir in terms of use with the influenza vaccine?
Yes
CDC recommends women in any trimester of their pregnancy who have a suspected or confirmed influenza infection receive prompt antiviral therapy with?
Oseltamivir or zanamivir
Zanamivir is almost exclusively eliminated from the body via?
Kidney
What is a intravenous neuraminidase inhibitor which is approved for treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza?
Peramivir
Peramivir is indicated for what population?
Patients 18 years and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days
What warning is given with peramivir?
May increase risk of hallucinations, delirium and abnormal behavior
What is a polymerase acidic endonuclease inhibitor used in the treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza?
Baloxavir
Baloxavir is indicated for what population?
Patients 12 years of age and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours
What is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of signs and symptoms of infection caused by various strains of influenza A virus and is also indicated in the treatment of parkinsonism?
Amantadine
The lowest reported acute lethal dose of amantadine was?
1 gram
What patient population is amantadine contraindicated for?
Those diagnosed with depression or with history of suicide attempts
Dosage of amantadine should be reduced in what patient population?
Those with renal disease
