Enteral Nutritional Route
- food or nutrients through GI tract
- advantages: protection of intestinal mucosal integrity, reduction of infection, reduction of morbidity
Adverse effects- GI intolerance, diarrhea, dumping syndrome, risk for aspiration
Elemental Formulation
Dipeptides, tripeptides, amino acids, glucose, oligosaccharides, vegetable oil
Used for: partial bowel obstruction, irritable bowel syndrome, radiation enteritis, bowel fistula, short bowel syndrome
Rep. Formula: peptamen, vital HN
Polymeric Formulation
Complex nutrients (protein, carbs, fat)
Used for: can be added to monomeric or ploymeric formulation to provide a more individualized nutrient formulation
Carb: moducal, polycose
Fat: MCT oil, microlipid
Protein: benoprotein, ProMod
Altered Amino Acid Formulation
Varying amounts of specific amino acids
Used for: patients with diseases associated with altered metabolic capacities

Formulation for Impaired Glucose
Protein, carbs, fat, sodium, potassium
Used for: patients with impaired glucose tolerance (eg. diabetes)
