HMG-CoA Inhibitors
MOA- inhibit enzyme HMG-CoA reductase which decreases production of cholesterol
Therapeutic- Lower LDL cholesterol in blood
Adverse effects- GI disturbances, rash, headache
Drug - end with -statin
Bile Acid Sequestrants
MOA- bind to bile acids and prevent reabsorption of bile acids from the small intestine
Therapeutic- reduce LDL and management of type II hyperlipoproreinemia
Adverse Effects - constipation, heartburn, nausea, belching and bloating
Drug- cholestyramine resin
Nicotinic Acid
MOA- unknown, inhibits lipolysis I’m adipose tissue and increases activity of lipoprotein lipase
Therapeutic- lower lipid levels
Adverse effects- flushing, pruritis, GI distress
Fibric Acid Derivatives
MOA- activate enzyme for the breakdown of cholesterol
Therapeutic- lower triglyceride levels and increase HDL
Adverse effects- abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, headache, blurred vision, increased risk for fall stones and prolonged thrombin time
Drug - gemifibrozil
Cholesterol absorption inhibitor
Drug - ezetimibe
Effects enhanced with statins
