For treatment of GERD, PUD, erosive esophagitis, upper GI bleeding, gastric hypersecretory

Proton Pump Inhibitor

A

Transports hydrogen ions out of the parietal cells decreasing pH

Used for erosive esophagitis, GERD, short term treatment of duodenal ulcers and benign gastric ulcers, gastric hypersecretory conditions and NSAID induced ulcers

Adverse Effects- increased risk of acute kidney injury, interstitial nephritis, C-diff, wrist,hip, spine fractures, pneumonia

Drug: end in -prazole

Antacids

A

Neutralize gastric acidity

Used for acute relief of symptoms associated with peptic ulcers, gastric enteritis,gastric hyper acidity and reflux

Adverse Effects- diarrhea, constipation, kidney stones, systemic alkalosis, hyper acidity, long term-bleeding ulcers

Drugs: aluminum, magnesium, calcium, sodium salts

Adverse Effects- seizures, C-diff, diarrhea, rash

Actives stress ulceration, long term therapy for PUD, esophageal erosions
