Bethanechol
Bladder control
Loss of strength in urinary muscles
Helps treat functional urinary retention (neurogenic bladder) and urinary atony
Expected outcome: non-distended bladder
Common side effect: urinary urgency, sweating, low HR and BP
Finasteride
Given for large prostate
BPH
will help shrink prostate
Terazosin and tamsulosin
Given to treat urinary retention in clients with enlarged prorate that hold back the urine
BPH
relaxes smooth muscle to help the body release urine
Slow position changes for orthostatic hypotension and avoid low BP medications due to relaxation of smooth muscles
Headache can also be a side effect
Avoid sildenafil
Grapefruit juice is okay with this drug
Oxybutynin Tolerodine
Used to treat overactive bladder
reduced urinary urgency and frequency and Nocturia
Dries body - anticholinergic
Cant see, cant pee, can’t spit can’t poop
may cause blurred vision, dry eyes and mouth
Avoid glaucoma and BPH
Constipation is common - stool softeners, avoid bowel obstructions
Oxybutynin Tolerodine adverse effects
urinary rention, no urine all day - report to HCP
Slow position changes ti prevent orthostatic hypotension
Avoid hyperthermia = too much sun exposure
The nurse is conducting teaching with an elderly patient newly prescribed terazosin which instructions should be included in the teaching plan?
