drug main uses (Adrenergic Neuron Blockers) Flashcards
1
Q
Reserpine
A
Peripheral
- Inhibit SNS by blocking postganglionic nerve endings; Decreased uptake of DA and NE and therefore a total decrease in amount released into synapse
- Irreversibie effect on NE vesicles
Decreased cardiac output and peripheral arterial resistance
2
Q
Methyldopa
A
Central
Conversion to alpha-methylnorepinephrine which acts as a2 agonist in vasomotor centers decreasing symp. outflow
Decreased renin release; possible decrease in HR and cardiac output; decrease peripheral resistance
3
Q
Clonidine (Catapres)
A
Central
Similar to methyldopa can be transdermal.
Similar to above; Also:
migraine, ADHD, menopausal hotflashes, PTSD; withdrawal from nicotine/EtOH/Morphine; Spinal analgesia
4
Q
Guanfacine (Tenex; Intuniv)
A
Central
Similar to methyldopa and clonidine, but less sedation
