DOMINIC Flashcards
Dominic
What does the measure assess? (can think about why it was developed)
Developed because of poor agreement between informants about children’s mental health
- adults more likely to perceive externalizing, less likely internalizing, unaware of delinquency
Child-report assessment needed
Most assessments were too long and complex for children
Dominic is 15 min pictoral assessment

What is involved in the assessment (e.g. materials, administration details, general scoring guidelines)
Procedure
- child introduced to main characters
- told responses will not be shared with parents unless reporting life threatening behaviour
- accepted responses include yes or no - cant say sometimes
- child can take a break if tired
DOES NOT collect info about frequency, duration, age of onset
CANNOT diagnose
2+ SD above mean = disorder likely present
1 sd = possible
Summary scores divided btw internalizing and externalizing disorders
Computerized version gives alerts for suicidal ideation and response set
- specific to the child’s sex and ethinicity - changes dominic
- Also an adolescent version
Dominic
Is it reliable / valid? Limitations/benefits of
standardization?
High test retest agreement
High agreement btw child psych judges
Dominic
Under what situation might you choose to administer the assessment? Consider the benefits & limitations?
Dominic
what are some benefits & limitations of the assessment?
Benefits
- short engaging
- easy to administer
- low vocab comp needed
Limitations
- doesn’t assess frequency, duration, onset
- children may weigh recent events heavier
- lack of comparison with other pictoral assessments
Dominic
How is the assessment similar / different from others discussed in the course?
Compared to MINI and SCID - screening tool
- Low vocab comprehension
- Time limited
- Administered by lay person
Dominic
What are the central / defining features of the assessment?
Target population: 6–11-year-olds;
Used in clinical, research, and teaching settings
