What are some factors to be considered when speaking with a child who has witnessed domestic violence in their home?
- Interview away from both victim and offender, unless the officer thinks it is in the
best interest of the child to be with the non-offending parent. In that case, instruct
the parent not to interfere or help with the questioning. - Interview in a place that is comfortable for the child.
- Get on the child’s level.
- Befriend the child before interviewing.
- Explain why they are there.
- Be careful not to ask leading questions of the child.
- Note if the child is fearful of one or both parents.
- Be aware the child will be inclined to feel responsible or guilty about what has
happened. - Reassure the child.
- Be aware that if a child is also the victim of abuse, he or she may be distrustful of
any adult or may have been warned never to talk to an officer. Don’t pry information
from the child. - Always close with “Is there anything you want to add?” * Debrief the child and let
them know they did a good job.
Using examples from class, what are some strategies an officer can use when
interviewing a victim who is in denial?
- Request a Supervisor to assist.
- Be aware the offender may know the LEO process, and be fearful of arrest.
Describe a circumstance when an officer should make immediate entry into a residence.

Why is it important for officers to immediately separate parties involved when responding
to a DV call?
The offender and victim may attempt to use the same story to protect the offender.
Explain the difference between a civil and criminal incident.
- Criminal charges are designed to punish the offender, and not protect the victim.
- Civil charges allow victim to sue for injuries, medical bills, and emotional suffering.

Provide an overview of Stalking Course of Conduct.
