Q

What are some factors to be considered when speaking with a child who has witnessed domestic violence in their home?

A
  • Interview away from both victim and offender, unless the officer thinks it is in the
best interest of the child to be with the non-offending parent. In that case, instruct
the parent not to interfere or help with the questioning.
  • Interview in a place that is comfortable for the child.
  • Get on the child’s level.
  • Befriend the child before interviewing.
  • Explain why they are there.
  • Be careful not to ask leading questions of the child.
  • Note if the child is fearful of one or both parents.
  • Be aware the child will be inclined to feel responsible or guilty about what has
    happened.
  • Reassure the child.
  • Be aware that if a child is also the victim of abuse, he or she may be distrustful of
any adult or may have been warned never to talk to an officer. Don’t pry information
    from the child.
  • Always close with “Is there anything you want to add?” * Debrief the child and let
them know they did a good job.
