What are the 3 typologies of intimate partner violence that have arisen in the last few decades?
Situational couple violence
Intimate terrorism

Define Situational couple violence aka. common couple violence.
Violence that enters a relationship when there is conflict that turns angry and then becomes violent.
- The most common form of intimate violence.
- Often a isolated incident that is nonrecurring
- Likely to be perpetrated by women and men
- Normally, no one is in fear of the other
Define Intimate terrorism aka. intimate partner abuse.
Is when the abuser terrorizes the victim and takes complete control of the relationship through intimidation, economic control, threats, isolation, use of privilege, and psychological abuse.
- Abuse is ongoing and ranges from moderate to severe
- Victims eventually fear their partner
Define Violent resistance.
Is when the victim of intimate terrorism fights back to resist the domination of the abuser.
- Will soon lead to other means of coping with the abuse.
How should you view partner abuse.
Is on a continuum. Many people commit an act of violence or aggression. However, very few people become involved in escalating violence, coercion, physical assaults, and/or intimidation in their relationships.
