DNA Viruses - Exam 4 Flashcards
What are the 7 DNA viruses for this exam?
Adeno, Pox, Parvo, Herpes, Papilloma, Polyoma, Hepadna
Adenoviridae characteristics
- linear, double stranded, non-enveloped, icosahedral, -Infects cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses
- main symptom is respiratory infections
- transmittable via droplets or fecal-oral
Adenovridiae diseases
- CAV1: infectious hepatitis
- CAV2: infectious tracheobronchitis “kennel cough”
Poxviridiae characteristics
- ZOONOTIC, linear, double stranded, cytoplasmic replication, intracellular mature virus, extracellular enveloped virion, intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, -main symptom is rash of pimples that become pustules
- transmittable via direct contact, fomites, or droplets
Poxviridiae diseases
Avi (bird), Sui (swine), Lepori (rabbit), capri (goat/sheep/bovine lumpy skin disease), para (squirrel and ORF), ortho (cows and cats), monkey (transmitted to humans by rodents), variolae vaccinae (small pox, cow)
Parvoviridiae characteristics
-linear, single stranded, smallest, non-enveloped, stable, autonomous replication or coinfection, -transmittable by respiratory, oral droplets, or fecal-oral
Parvoviridiae diseases
- human B19 (5th disease in kids)
- canine parvo: protoparvovirus, puppies
- FPV: feline panleukopenia virus
- MEV: mink enteritis virus
- ADV: Aleutian disease virus (mink/ferrets)
- GP and MDP: goose and Muscovy duck (Derzy’s)
- PPV: porcine
Herpesviridae characteristics
- linear, double stranded, enveloped by budding, tegument, nuclear replication
- infects insects, reptiles, amphibians, mollusks, birds, mammals
- transmittable by species jumping, latent infection, nose to nose contact, and aerosols
Herpesviridae diseases
- Suid: Aujeszky’s disease
- Bovine: IBR (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis), red nose
- Gallid: avian laryngotracheitis, Marek’s
Papillomaviridae characteristics
- circular, double stranded, non-enveloped, small ,release by desquamation
- infect mammals, birds, snakes
- transmittable by sexual or close direct contact
- symptoms: asymptomatic or benign tumors that can become malignant
Polyomaviridae characteristics
- circular, double stranded, non-enveloped, release by lysis
- infects mammals and birds
- transmittable by aerosolized dust, contaminated feces, eggs
- symptoms: respiratory, kidney, brain
Polyomaviridae diseases
- BFD: budgerigar fledgling disease
- SV40: simian (monkey)
Hepadnaviridae characteristics
- partially double stranded, circular, enveloped, reverse transcriptase, release by exocytosis
- infects humans, apes, and birds
- transmittable by parental, sexual, or blood
Hepadnaviridae diseases
Hepatitis B (acute or chronic) Woodchuck: liver disease
