DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
what is the definition of semi conservative replication:
A
- each dna strand acts as a template
- the daughter dna has one new dna strand and one original parental strand
2
Q
process:
A
- dna helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between the complementary base PAIRS BETWEEN the two strands of the double helix causing the double helix to unwind
- each of the separated parental dna STRANDS will act as a template
- free floating nucleotides within the nucleus are attracted to the complementary base PAIRS on the parental dna strandS acting as a template
- the adjacent nucleotides are joined together by a phosphodiester bond via a condensation reaction that is catalysed by dna polymerase
- there is now TWO SETS of daughter dna. one strand being the original parental dna and the other being the newly synthesised dna
