Diuretics Medications Flashcards
Loop Diuretics: Prototype
furosemide [Lasix[
bumetanide [Bumex]
torsemide [Demadex]
If it ends in -ide its likely a loop diuretic
Loop Diuretics: Therapeutic Use
Diuretic of choice when rapid effects are required like pulmonary edema.
Loop Diuretics: EPA
Inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of henle
Loop Diuretics: ADR
Ototoxcity
Hypokalemia, Hyponatremia, Hypochloremia, Dehydration [fluid volume deficit], hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia
Loop Diuretics: Interventions
Must administer IV dose slowly. AT 1-2 min per 20 mg
Monitor K+ and other electrolytes [but mostly K+ as it increases the risk of dysrhythmia if low]
Watch for hearing changes like hearing loss and tinnitus.
Loop Diuretics: Contraindications
Caution with electrolyte imbalances and dehydration.
Lithium + L.Diuretics = increased risk for lithium toxicity
Normal range for potassium
3.5 - 5 mmol/L. Remembah da bananas. Half yellow bananas that com in bunches of 3-5
Thiazide Diuretics: Prototypes
hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide)
chlorothiazide (Diuril)
Thiazide Diuretics: Therapeutic Use
Mild to moderate hypertension along with long-term management of heart failure and hypertension.
Thiazide Diuretics: ADRs
hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia
Thiazide Diuretics: EPA
Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium, water, chloride, and bicarbonate in the distal convoluted tubule.
Thiazide Diuretics: Interventions
Give the last dose before 1500, and monitor for muscle twitching/weakness along with irregular pulse and nausea.
Thiazide Diuretics: Contraindications
Renal decompensation and anuria
Lithium taken with this class of medications will increase risk of lithium toxicity
Potassium Sparing Diuretic: Prototypes
Spironolactone (Aldactone)
Potassium Sparring Diuretic: Therapeutic Use
Heart Failure, ascites, Hypertension
