Diuretics Flashcards
1
Q
Diuretics
Type: Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
Example: Acetazolomide
A
- Blocks carbonic anhydrase in the proximal tubes.
- Not used much as a diuretic; better for open angle glaucoma when you are trying to get the ocular pressure down.
*Increased loss of bicarbonate can lead to metabolic acidosis.
2
Q
Diuretics
Type: Loop
Examples: Furosemide
Bumetanide
A
- most efficient & fast acting
- can be given PO or IV
- watch for a decreased potassium levels
- may cause ototoxicity(the chance will increase when given with an Aminoglycoside)
- used for acute edema (pulmonary or CHF)
3
Q
Diuretics
Type: Osmotic
Example: Mannitol
A
- used to get rid of water instead of sodium
- best for increased intracranial pressure
4
Q
Diuretics
Type: Potassium-sparing
Example: Spironolactone
A
- used orally, not a powerful as loop diuretics
- watch for an INCREASED POTASSIUM LEVELS
- DO NOT GIVE to pxs with DM
- best diuretic for hyperaldosteronism
5
Q
Diuretics
Type: Thiazide
Example: Hydrochlorothiazide
A
- acts on distal tubes
- used for chronic hypertension
- slow acting diuretic
- INCREASES toxicity in heart meds: quinidine &digoxin
- decreases effectiveness of anti-diabetic agent
