ANTIBIOTICS
Aminoglycosides

'’A mean old glycoside’’

(Vancomycin, Streptomycin, Azithromycin, Gentamycin)

❌ do NOT give during pregnancy

A

very powerful antibiotics to treat conditions like:

  • Meningitis
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Septicemia
  • C. difficile

-causes ear (ototoxicity) & kidney (nephrotoxicity) damage
-effects on hearing: ringing and dizziness
❌ do NOT give during pregnancy
- draw a peak & trough (blood test)
-Draw peak 30 mins after giving med (IV route)
-Draw peak 1 hour after (PO route)
-Draw trough 30 mins after final dose

Penicillins -PCN

(Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Ampicillin)

✔️ SAFE for pregnancy

A

-Gonorrhea, Pneumonia, UTI

1st ?? - ask about allergy
2nd ?? - ask about any kind of reaction (itching, rash, hives)
❌ do NOT give if any reaction has occurred in the past

✔️ SAFE for pregnancy

First time Px - stay with them just like blood administration

Educate Px to take med for the full prescribed length of time. ❌ do NOT STOP when symptoms disappear.

ANTIDOTE: EPINEPHRINE

(Doxycycline, Demecyclines, Minocycline)

✔️Give if allergic to PCN
✔️Give this med with straw

-UTI, Pneumonia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis
✔️Give if allergic to PCN
✔️Give this med with  straw
❌ Keep out of direct sunlight
❌do NOT give if pregnant/ nursing
❌do NOT give with cow's milk
❌do NOT give to children under 8 yo (will cause teeth to turn black)
❌ Avoid giving with Lasix (diuretic)

Monitor liver enzymes, kidney function, labs & UO

(Cefazolin, Cephalexin)

❌do NOT give if allergic to PCN

A
  • Gram negative bacteria
  • UTI, Pneumonia, Gonorrhea
    ❌do NOT give if allergic to PCN

Side effects: Remember that Cephalosporins will leave you HAIRY.

𝘼 naphylactic shock (if allergic)
𝙄 nsufficien platelets (thrombocytopenia)
𝙍 enal Problems (nephrotoxic)
𝙔 ellow poop (diarrhea)

(Ciprofloxacin)

  • Bacterial Infections, Respiratory Anthrax Tract Infections
  • GI distress (NV diarrhea)
  • w/ this med a false positive on urine drug screen = opiates

-in children may cause arthrotoxicity
