ANALGESIC —NON OPIOID TYPE
Acetaminophen
A
- mild/moderate pain, fever, arthritis (gout/rheumatoid)
- x do NOT give to liver failure/ renal failure pxs
ANTIDOTE: ACETYLCYSTEINE
-overdose signs: weak pulse, with clammy cold skin

Naproxen
A
-mild/moderate pain, fever, arthritis (gout/rheumatoid)
decreases inflammation
- Take with food; will cause GI ulcers/bleeding
- check for BLACK STOOL (sign of internal bleeding)

NSAIDs
A
- mild/moderate pain, fever, arthritis (gout/rheumatoid)
- blood thinner
- Take with food; will cause GI ulcers/bleeding
- x do NOT give NSAID and Aspirin together.
- STOP taking 1 WEEK BEFORE the surgery.
- can cause ototoxicity & photosensitivity

Aspirin
A
- mild/moderate pain, fever, arthritis (gout/rheumatoid)
- blood thinner
- x do NOT give with other anticoagulants
- x do NOT give to children with flu- like symptoms bec of Reye Syndrome
- STOP taking 1 WEEK BEFORE the surgery.

Morphine
A
- Hold med if respirations <10 (will cause respiratory depression)
- WOF: constipation
- Addiction may occur with long term use.

Hydromorphone
A
- reduce respirations
- THIS IS NOT MORPHINE. DO NOT INTERCHANGE THEM
-Hydromorphone is many more times stronger than Morphine

Codeine
A
- used as a cough suppressant
- Take with food to prevent N & V.

Meperidine Hcl
A
- x do NOT give to Pxs with HEAD INJURIES (can cause ICP)

Oxycodone
A
- has acetaminophen in it
- x do NOT give to Pxs allergic to acetaminophen
-OK to give if the Pxs is allergic to aspirin
