Disorders of The Muscular System Flashcards
Muscle shortens its length in the resting state. Usually occurs in individuals who are bedridden for long periods and the muscles are not properly exercised.
Contracture
Spastic and painful contractions of muscles that occur because of an irritation within the muscle such as inflammation of connective tissue or lactic acid buildup.
Cramps
Term that means muscle pain
Myalgia
Inflammation of muscular tissue
Myositis
Decrease in muscle bulk due to a lack of exercise as when a limb is in a cast for a prolonged period.
Atrophy
An increase in the size of a muscle caused by an increase in the bulk of muscle cells through exercises.
Hypertrophy
Inflammation of a tendon
Tendinitis
An inherited muscular disorder, occurring most often in males, in which the muscle tissue degenerates overtime, resulting in complete helplessness
Muscular Dystrophy
The easy tiring of muscles, or muscle weakness. Usually begins within the face.
Myasthenia Gravis
Caused by a degeneration of the motor neurons of the anterior horns of the spinal cord and the corticospinal tracts.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Muscles remain in a state of rigidity for about 24 hours.
Rigor Mortis
Rapid vibration of the uvula and soft palate
Snoring
Caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani
Tetanus
Caused by a virus that is an enterovirus. Enters the spinal cord of the cns and affects the peripheral nerves and muscles that they control.
Polio
Inflammation of the connective tissue (Fascia) that is part of the arches of the foot
Plantar Fasciitis
