A term indicating ‘emotion’ or ‘mood’
What are mood disorders?
Disorders in which mood is severely disturbed
What is Major Depressive Disorder?
Severe depression that comes on suddenly and seems to have no external cause, or is too severe for current circumstances
What are the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder?
Depressed, take little pleasure in daily activities, have trouble sleeping or sleep too much, changes in appetite, excessive guilt and trouble concentrating.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?
It is a type of depression that occurs at specific times of the year, usually during the fall and winter months. It’s characterized by mood changes and symptoms similar to depression.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
When a person experiences periods of moods that can range from severe depression to manic episodes.
What is manic?
Having the quality of excessive excitement, energy, and elation or irritability
What is Bipolar I Disorder?
Where an individual experience mood that spans from normal to manic and may or may not experience episodes of depression
What is Bipolar II Disorder?
Spans of normal mood are in distributed with episodes of major depression and episodes of hypomania (a level of mood that is elevated but at a level below or less severe than full mania).
How does the behavioural perspective explain mood disorders?
Depression is linked to learned helplessness (where an individual feels powerless to change their situation or outcomes)
How does the cognitive perspective explain mood disorders?
Depression is linked to distorted thinking and negative, self-defeating thoughts.
How does the biological perspective explain mood disorders?
Depression is linked to variation in neurotransmitter systems (serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine) or specific brain activity; genes and heritability.
