A

What is social anxiety disorder (social phobia)?

A

A fear of interacting with others or being in social situations that might lead to a negative emotion. Afraid of being evaluated in some negative way by others so they avoid situations that may be embarrassing. Very self-conscious. Stage fright and public speaking, etc

A

What is Agoraphobia?

A

A fear of being in a place or situation from which escape is difficult or impossible if something should go wrong. This fear often leads to avoidance of certain places or situations. Crowded places, open spaces, public transportation or being alone outside the home.

A

A

Racing heart, rapid breathing, a sensation of being ‘out of ones body’, dulled hearing and vision, sweating, and a dry mouth.

A

A disorder in which panic attacks occur more than once or repeatedly, and cause persistent worry or changes in behaviour. Changes in behavior to avoid attacks. Fear of it happening again.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

A

A disorder in which a person has feelings of dread and impending doom along with physical symptoms of stress, which lasts 6 months or more. They worry excessively about day-to-day things as well as things no one else would worry about. Cant control the feeling.

A

Feel tense and edgy, get tired easily, and trouble concentrating. They have muscles aches, sleeping problems, and get often irritable.

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

A

A disorder in which intruding, recurring thoughts or obsessions create anxiety that is relieved by performing a repetitive, ritualistic behaviour or mental act (compulsion). The compulsions are meant to lower the anxiety caused by the thought.

A

Anxiety, dissociation, nightmares, poor sleep, reliving an event, and concentration problems, and flashbacks.

A

A

The tendency to believe that one’s performance must be perfect or the result will be a total failure.

What is overgeneralization?

A

A distortion of thinking in which a person draws sweeping conclusions based on only one incident or event and applies those conclusions to events that are unrelated to the original situation.

What is minimization?

A

The tendency to give little or no importance to one’s successes or positive events and traits. It’s often used as a defense mechanism to avoid dealing with uncomfortable feelings or situations.

A

Anxious behavioral reactions are learnt.

How does the biological perspective explain anxiety disorders?

A

Anxiety is due to dysfunction in several neurotransmitters systems (serotonin, GABA) and/or difference in brain activation; panic disorder is also hereditary

A

Anxiety is a result of illogical irrational thought processes (magnification, all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralization and minimization).
