How long is the oesophagus?
25cm, long muscular tube
What epithelium lines the oesophagus?
Stratified squamous epithelium, except distal 2cm below diaphragm - glandular columnar mucosa
What is oesphagitis?
Inflammation of oesophagus, chronic/acute
What causes oesphagitis?
Bacterial, viral (HSV1/CMV), fungal (candida-rare), ingestion of corrosive substance, reflux of gastric contents
What is cause of reflux oesphagitis?
Defective sphincter, hiatus hernia, increase intra-abdominal pressure, increase gastric fluid volume due to gastric outflow stenosis
Main symptom of reflux oesphagitis?
Heartburn
Hiatus hernia
Abnormal bulging of a portion of the stomach through the diaphragm
Sliding hiatus hernia
Reflux symptoms
Para-oesophageal hiatus hernia
Strangulation
