Disease Peripheral Blood Smears Flashcards
Iron Deficiency Anemia
Characterized by hypochromatic and microcytic RBCs
Thalassemia
Characterized by poikilocytosis, target cells, and nucleated red cells
B12/Folate Deficiency
Characterized by oval macrocytes, anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, hypersegmented neutrophils, decreased platelets
Lead Poisoning
Characterized by basophilic stipiling
Sideroblastic anemia
Characterized by dimorphic population of RBCs, anisocytosis, and poikilocytosis
Hereditary spherocytosis
Hereditary elliptocytosis
Sickle Cell Anemia
Characterized by sickle cells, poikilocytosis, target cells
Schistocytes, can be associated with trauma from a malfunctioning mechanical valve
Antibody mediated
Characterized by microspherocytes and nucleated RBCs
Antibody tagged RBCs are partially “eaten” by macrophages and turn into spherocytes
RBC clumps due to cold autoantibodies. These can be sequelae of infections like mycoplasma or EBV
Reactive Lymphocytes = infectious mononucleosis
Cleaved lymphocytes = bordatella pertussis
Borrelia, causes relapsing fever
