Directional & Anatomical Planes Flashcards
Anterior/Ventral
At or near the front of the body (front view).
Posterior/Dorsal
At or near the back of the body (back view).
Midline
An imaginary vertical line that divides the body equally right down the middle.
Lateral
Away from midline; Position of a structure relative to the midline.
Medial
Toward the midline; Nearer to the midline.
Superior/Cranial
Toward the head/upper part of the body.
Used for axial region
Inferior/Caudal
Away from the head/ toward the lower part of the body.
Used for axial region
Superficial
Close to the surface of the body.
Deep
Away from the surface of the body.
Proximal
Closer to the point of origin; Nearer to the trunk of the body.
(Used for appendages)
Distal
Further from the point of origin; Further away from the trunk of the body.
(Used for appendages)
Frontal/Coronal plane
Divides the body into anterior and posterior (front and back).
Transverse Plane
Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left sides.
Midsagittal plane/Median plane
Divides the body at midline into equal right and left sides.
