Definition and consequences?
Heart muscle disease.
Causes all 4 chambers of the heart to dilate- this weakens the walls of the ventricles so they have less strength to contract and as a result pump out less blood- this can cause systolic HF
Causes
PRIMARY:
-Idiopathic
-Chemical: toxins, radiation
-Disease: postpartum, autoimmune, inflammation, infection
-Injury: cell loss, scar damage
SECONDARY
could be related to any disease apart from Ischaemia/valvular disease
Symptoms
Develops slowly
SOB: orthopnea and PND
Ankle swelling
Weight gain
Past medical history
- travelling history
- thyroid problems
- systemic illness
- Valve disease
Examination
- shows a s3 sound and s4 murmur
- May show mitral regurgitation
- displaced apex
- high JVP
- poor superficial perfusion
Treatment
General measures: correct diet, underlying issues
Medication: beta blockers, ACEI, anticoagulants
Surgery:
- ICD
-heart transplant
