digestive organs Flashcards
primary digestive organs
oral cavity, teeth, tongue, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus
accessory digestive organs
salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
oral cavity
site of mechanical breakdown of food, moistening of food bolus, initial digestion of carbs and lipids
teeth
help with physical breakdown of food
tongue
manipulates materials inside the mouth, occasionally used to bring food into oral cavity
pharynx
common passageway for solid food, liquids and air
muscles lining the pharynx move food to esophagus
esophagus
muscles lining esophagus help move food from pharynx to the stomach
small intestine
site of most enzymatic digestion and most absorption of nutrients
large intestine
reabsorbs water and turns intestinal contents into feces, absorbs vitamins, storage of fecal matter before defecation
anus
exit out of anal canal
salivary glands
secrete saliva which contains enzymes that help hydrate food and starts the digestion of starches; defends against pathogens
liver
digestive organ that secretes bile into hepatic ducts and processes absorbed chemicals
gallbladder
stores and concentrates bile secreted by liver before discharging into the small intestine; biles helps with breakdown and absorption of lipids
