Digestion: The small intestine Flashcards
What are the three sections of the small intestine?
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
describe the structure of the duodenum
curves around the head of the pancreas.
What does Secretions from the Pancreas and Liver/Gallbladder merge into
Duodenum at the Hepato-pancreatic sphincter and enter the duodenum at the duodenal papilla.
What does the Ileum do
valve controls entry to the large intestine (or colon) and prevents backflow into the Ileum.
terminates at the Ileocecal Valve where it joins with the large intestine
What is the ileum described as?
the terminal section of the small intestine
What is the function of the small intestine?
Secretion of intestinal juice
Completion of chemical digestion
Protection against microbes
What is the Small intestine is supported by
double layer of peritoneal membrane – called the mesentery
What do jejunum and ileum from
posterior abdominal wall
What is the function of the mesentery
Support:
Blood vessel
Nerves
Lymphatic
What does the greater omentum do
transverse colon and small intestine
Where are Intestinal villi most common in
duodenum and jejunum
What do the intestinal villi do?
Push into intestine contents and increase surface area – better for absorption
What is the intestinal villi lined with
columnar epithelia cells and connective tissue core
What does the core contain?
blood capillaries and a lacteal (lymphatic capillary)
What does the core do?
Carry nutrients away
