Digestion:stomach Flashcards
Where is the mucous membrane lining thick?
in stomach
What does the stomach lining contain?
small pores the end of tubular gastric glands (Bottom diagram)
What are the three types of secretory cell in gastric glands
mucous cells
chief cells
parietal cells
What does the mucous cells do?
secrete mucus
where are mucous cells located?
neck of glands
Where are chief cells located
deeper level
What do chief cells do?
secrete pepsinogen (inactive digestive enzyme)
Where are parietal cells located
deeper level
what do parietal cells do?
secrete hydrochloric acid (HCL)
What happens when Pepsinogen when mixed with HCL?
converts to its active form – pepsin
What does pepsin(enzyme) do
converts proteins into polypeptides
What does HCL provide?
acid environment – most suited to action of pepsin
What do Mucous cells of gland and stomach surface secrete?
thick alkaline solution that covers stomach lining – prevention of digestion of stomach lining
What is intrinsic factor (from parietal cells) do?
required for the absorption of Vit b12 in small intestine
What is the resulting thick liquid called after 1-2 in the body?
chyme
