Digestion - Pre Stomach Flashcards
What are the 3 mass ejecting glands?
Parotid- in parotid fascia, largest, serous
Submandibular- mainly serous, on either side of mouth, at the floor
Sublingual- mostly mucinous
What is the role of Saliva?
5 Things
Moisten and soften food Lubricate and taste Neutralise acid Begin digestion Maintain oral health and tooth integrity
What do minor ejecting glands do?
Secrete continuously
Under ANS contol
Hydrate oral cavity, prevent friction and bacterial build up
What happens with failure of the glands?
Dry Mouth
Halitosis
Poor dental hygiene
Describe the structure of a salivary gland
Terminal, branched structure
Acinus
Intercalated Duct- lined with secretory cells
Striated Duct- drain into excretory ducts
Myoepithelial cells embrace units and contract to help expel secretions
Describe the production of Saliva
1) Primary Stage- in acini, they secrete isotonic fluid
2) Secondary- modification in striated ducts, ions are reabsorbed to create hypotonic saliva Na+, Cl- out K+, HCO3- in
Describe the Oesophagus
Thin Walled
Muscular
2 Physiological Sphincters- Upper and Lower
What are the 3 Phases of Swallowing?
1) Oral Phase- Preparatory and Trasmit Oral Phases
2) Pharyngeal Phase
3) Oesophageal Phase
