Digestion + Emzymes Flashcards
Digestion
The breakdown of food
Chemical digestion
Breakdown of food using enzyms
Enzyme
A protein that speeds up a reaction in the body without the enzyme being used up
Amylase
Salivary which digests starch, breaking it down into simpler sugar called maltose
Equation for starch
Starch -> amylase -> maltose
Molar
Largest teeth, they crush and grind food
Premolars
Round teeth, crush and grind food
Canines
Long and pointed. Grip and tear food
Incisors
Sharp edges like a chisel, slice food
What kills bacteria and softens food in the stomach
Hydrochloride acid
Small intestine
Produce more enzymes which complete the breakdown of food. In the lower part of the small intestine, the food passes into the bloodstream.
Liver
Produces bile - helps digest fat in the small intestine
Pancreas
Produces enzymes. They pass from pancreas to the small intestine to help digest the food
Large intestine
The end part of the instestine that is wider and shorter that small intestine. It takes water back into bloodstream leaving waste material which is called faeces which is then excreted.
Egestion
The loss of undigested food
