A
The food must be broken down before it can be abosrbed and used for its purpose in the body.

The process of digestion
A
- The food is broken down in the mouth into smaller pieces by the teeth
- Canines and incisors: cut and grab the food
- Molars: Grind and crush the food - Food is mixed in with the saliva which contains
- Enzymes (help speed up the rate of reactions in living things
- Water: Dissolve food particles to make it easier to taste
- Mucus: which helps with swallowing and acts as a lubricant. - The tongue pushes the food back where it is swallowed
- Food is prevented from entering the trachea by a flap called epiglottis
- The swallowed food moves down into the stomach by a long tube which is called the esophagus.
- When the food is going down the esophagus it activates muscular contractions called peristalsis. Which helps the food go down the esophagus.
