Blood Flashcards
3 circulatory pathways
- Systemic pathway:
- To and from the body organs - Pulmonary Pathway:
- To and from the lung - Cardiac pathway:
- To and from the heart muscles
4 parts of blood
- Red blood cells (45%)
- White blood cells (1%)
- platelets (1%)
- Plasm a(55%)
Red blood cells
Erythrocytes
- Specialized for oxygen transportation within iron-containing hemoglobin (molecule that carries oxygen)
Biconcave shape (no nucleus) increases the surface area for gas exchange.
Hemoglobin can also carry C0z from the cells to lungs
White blood cells
WBC or leukocytes
- Defend body against bacteria and viruses
- The WBC increase when fighting an infection
5 types of WBC
Monocyte:
Find and destroy germs and also eliminate infected cells.
Eosinophil:
inflamed areas, trap substances and kill cells, and they play a big role in allergic reactions
Basophil:
Respond to parasites, fungi, and cancer cells
Lymphocytes:
\killing of virus, kill of infected cells, and tumor cells, help the immune system
Neutrophil:
Defense against bacteria and fungal pathogens
Platelets
Thrombocytes
- Help with clotting basically they react with the plasma to create a temporary clot (thrombus) to stop the leak of blood from the vessel.
Gather at a site of damaged cells
Plasma
yellowish fluid
92% water
Functions:
Carries sold blood components through the blood vessels. As well as water, enzymes, protein, ions, salts, gases, nutrients
What does Low RBC Means
leads to iron deficiency (amenia). There enough blood to carry oxygen to the parts needed so this will make the person feel tired.
Not eating enough iron or excess of bleeding
What does high white blood cell count mean
- A sign that the body is fighting an infection
- a symptom of leukemia.
