Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The overall movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of low concentration.
Why does diffusion happen in both liquids and gases?
Because the particles are free to move
What is osmosis?
The net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.
Does water particles move both ways during osmosis?
Yes
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A one with small holes in it
What is active transport?
The movement of particles across a membrane from an area of lower to an area of higher concentration
Does active transport follow the concentration gradient?
No, it goes against a concentration gradient
What is the hypertonic side?
More solute in the solution compared to the water
What is hypotonic?
Less solute in solution compared to the water
What is isotonic?
The same concentration of solute compared to water
