Diffusion Flashcards
Why can oxygen and Carbon dioxide diffuse easily through cell membranes?
So small can pass through spaces in phospholipids. Non polar so soluble in lipids
What do carrier protiens do?
Move large molecules across membrane
Large molecule attaches to large molecule in membrane
Protien changes shape and releases molecule on other side of membrane
What do channel protiens do?
Form pores allow charged particles to diffuse through
What does the rate of diffusion depend on in simple diffusion
Concentration gradient
Thickness of exchange surface
Surface srea
What does the rate of facilitated diffusion depend on
Concentration gradient
Number of channel or carrier protiens
What is diffusion
Net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Diffuse both ways but net movement to lower. Passive process
