DNA Replication Flashcards
1
Q
How does DNA polymerase work
A
One end of DNA is called 3’ and one end is called 5’
They are anti parralell
New strand is made 5 to 3
DNA polymerase moves down the template strand in 3-5 direction
2
Q
Explain how DNA replicates by semi conservative replication
A
Enzyme DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between bases on the polynucleotide DNA strands. Helix unwind
Complementary base pairing mean that free floating DNA nucleotides are attracted to their complementary exposed bases
Condensation reactions join the nucleotides of the new strands together catalysed by DNA polymerase. Hydrogen bonds form between new bases between original and new strands
One strand of old and one strand of new
