What do carbohydrates do?
Provide a slow release of energy (50% of diet) eg. Pasta
What are the 7 food groups?
Carbohydrate Protein Fat Fibre Water Vitamins Minerals
What do proteins do?
Help repair muscles and stimulate growth (15% of diet) eg. Meat
What do fats do?
Provide a slow release of energy when working at a low intensity (35% of diet) eg. Cheese
What is fibre?
Indigestible plant material that provides roughage for the digestive system (prevents constipation). comes from breads and cereals
What do water and fluids do?
Prevent dehydration so performance levels can be maintained, we need to constantly replace what we lose in urine, sweat and breathing
What do vitamins do?
Keep you healthy by boosting your immune system and helping your body grow and function
What do minerals do?
Help the body grow and function properly (found in vegetables and meat)
What can a dietary imbalance lead to? Explain what they are
Anorexia - a mental health disorder of a life threatening obsession to lose weight (could effect internal organs)
Obesity - people with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 are considered obese. The result of consuming surplus calories. Can lead to diabetes or heart disease
What is carbohydrate loading?
Aiming to increase the glycogen stores in the muscles and liver, performers of endurance activities eat complex carbs during the week, enabling them to work at a higher intensity for longer
What is a high protein diet?
Used by power athletes, the protein resynthesises their muscle cells after training faster than usual, meaning they can do more and more frequent exercising.
