Ben Flashcards
How does each role in sport link with Ben and his gymnastics?
Performer - Ben is currently a participant
Organiser - governing bodies (British Gymnastics) will organise his events and he himself runs competitions for his local primary
Coach - he has access to a coach who gives him training and advice and he himself runs training sessions at a local primary
Official - there is a panel of judges that decide how well he did and if rules were broken
How will age affect his gymnastic performance?
He will continue to develop his fitness components until he reaches his peak (mid-20s for male gymnast) however flexibility starts to decrease after the age of 16 (would need to focus on flexibility in training)
How does gender effect gymnastics?
Men and women compete in different categories due to their physical differences and development rates.
Males have six individual apparatus whereas women have four
What is bens body type and why is that suitable for gymnastics?
Likely a mesomorph, suitable for gymnast pics as they have large muscles for generating power and strength in many events such as vault, rings and bars.
What are the usual injuries for gymnastics and why?
Collision injuries, often at the wrist or ankle (where gymnasts often collide) because they have to rotate on and off apparatus at great speeds
How can Bens six day a week training be effected?
Time available: balance training, studying, socialising and resting (already not prioritising social much) Funding: the world class podium potential programme is likely funded by British Gymnastics, providing top facilities, equipment and technology ect.
What activity group is gymnastics in (skills it involves) according to GCSE PE?
The accurate replications of actions, phrases and sequences
What is Bens anxiety likely caused by and why?
Stress, which can be brought on by:
Performance pressure
Being watched by family or friends
Important competitions
How can stress and anxiety effect Bens performance?
It could physically tighten his muscles (effect flexibility and other movements) - this could also lead to injury
It could mentally, making him less focused, more aggressive, and unable to accept criticism
How could Ben reduce injury risk?
Wear the tight fitted clothing required and/or pants with stirrups
Use safety equipment: grips, guards, wrist straps
Technique, risk assessment and full warm up
What does gymnastics predominantly use in terms of respiration?
Anaerobic energy system (short in duration -1/2minutes). Performances require strength and power
What will happen inside bens body whist he is performing?
Blood will carry out its roles and he will experience oxygen debt
How can gymnastics be a life long sport? He can this benefit the elderly?
Recreational gymnastics (a lot less intense and fast and no pressures) This can benefit people's strength, power and flexibility -which could keep the elderly's muscles fully functioning for longer than normal
Is Ben healthy?
Without question Ben is physically healthy however his mental health could be effected by his lack of socialising and of coarse his social health is the same
What must Ben do to succeed at elite level in terms of his health?
* is next to what he might be failing to do
No drugs Follow diet and training plans Maintain hygiene * Maintain stress and anxiety * have good social relationships with everyone
What are the main components of fitness Ben will need for gymnastics?
Physical: power, strength, flexibility
Skill related: coordination, balance, agility
How would Ben use each type of strength in his performance?
Static: holding his position on the rings
Explosive: pushing up out of a handstand
Dynamic: maintaining his applied strength against the rings (gravity) for a period of time
Examples of Ben using flexibility and power?
Flexibility: allow him to perform more advanced moves such as a tucked back somersault
Power: push off from a round off at speed to gain height during floor
